Redcar music man honoured in song
Aug 28 2007 by Dave Robson, Evening Gazette
REDCAR’S music man has been honoured in song.
A new CD, “Norman Evans - High Street Minstrel Man”, tells the tale of charity busker Norman Evans MBE.
Written and performed by local folk musician Bob Fortune, it’s a whimsical, heartfelt tribute to one of Redcar’s best-known citizens. And now Norman has his own copy, complete with framed photo, after a presentation by Bob and Redcar MP Vera Baird.
Bob, 64, said Norman is an inspirational figure.
“Norman’s been a musician all his life so to celebrate his involvement with music and the money he’s raised, I wrote a song about him.
“I’ve sung it all over and it gets a good reaction, so I’m pleased with it and I hope Norman is too.”
The CD also features on piano “Jonty” - a well-known local musician Norman used to play with back in the 1960s.
Norman, who has multiple sclerosis and recently announced he was cutting back on his busking because of health problems, said he was delighted to have a song written about him. Kendra Pilcher, the Redcar teenager who has also raised money for several local charities, arranged the ceremony.
Copies of the CD, at £3 a time and with proceeds to the MS Society, are available from Norman at his busking pitch near Boyes or from Kendra on 0795 0800003, email kendra_charity@ntlworld.com or visit www.changeforasmile.piczo.com
